Affordable DPW Project | Saving $10M+ on a new DPW?

After considerable pressure from community members, the Ad Hoc Building Committee (AHBC) for the DPW proposed a 21,300 sf facility for $29 Million at its recent DPW Community Forum.

This amount has been cut by several million following persistent pressure that the Truro community will not accept at DPW at the size and cost previously proposed at well above $33M.  At the same time this is a great gamble as the Town may not accept it at this level either.

In part, this may be a result of the carefully researched work of the Affordable DPW Project, a “group of Truro taxpayers and voters with expertise in engineering, municipal construction, architecture, DPW design, public finance, data analysis, and communications who came together to monitor and evaluate ongoing evolution of new DPW plans and costs over the past year.”

They issued a summary comparison of five other MA “peer community” towns with larger populations, more services, roads, employees, and vehicles that have built modern DPW facilities in 2025-26 for $10 M less on average on an equalized cost basis.  Their report can be found here.

A brief re-cap of their position is seen here.

Voters will decide on May 16th if this has merit.
