Dog Advocates Take Action to Protect Beach Access for Dogs

The Health Agent has reported that the State has notified Truro it must comply with plover protections by limiting or curtailing dogs on town beaches.  As of this date no evidence that the State has made such a demand has been made public.

Triggered by an incident last July on Fisher Beach where two plover chicks were found dead and mangled in the wrack line, the Audubon, State Fish and Wildlife, and Wild Care labeled this a “Take” – notwithstanding that no definitive evidence identified it as a dog incident.

The Health/ Conservation Agent made clear the Town feels it must responsively protect plovers against possible dog predation this season.  Proposed regulation changes to our beach rules came before the Select Board on March 10.   You can see the large turnout of dog-owners and dog lovers who turned out to make comments on this and to make suggestions about how to balance both concerns.   Worth the watch from about 25 minutes in:  inspiring, informative –  and there’s still time to express your views to the Select Board.  Email Emily Beebe,  Health/Conservation Agent with your remarks.
