PLEASE SIGN Petition for Means-Tested RTE – MPRTA To File Petition with MA Legislators on Oct 30
In conjunction with part-time organizations on Cape Cod and in the Berkshires – including TPRTA – the Massachusetts Part-Time Resident Taxpayers Alliance (MPRTA) has submitted a request to the Massachusetts Legislature to amend the current Residential Tax Exemption (RTE) law to require a means test in Seasonal Communities that provide the exemption.
Many part-time resident taxpayers have already emailed their legislators to support this change. (Thanks!) The linked petition is a way for an even larger group of taxpayers in towns identified as Seasonal Communities to show their support for this critical legislation and time-sensitive petition.
All part-time resident taxpayers in Seasonal Communities should sign this petition. So should ALL other taxpayer residents who support having the RTE eligibility be based on financial need – those who live full-time in MA, those who live in other states, and full-timers who support Means-Tested RTEs, which are consistent with every other form of property tax relief and abatement allowed by the Commonwealth.
State law allows an RTE at a maximum rate of 35% but Seasonal Communities are allowed to increase the RTE rate to as much as 50%. This is a staggering rate of tax abatement for full-timers shifted on to part-timers. Already, Truro’s part-timers are feeling the burden is unsustainable.
A means-tested RTE will ensure that those full-timers who need tax relief to stay in their homes get tax relief – and that those wealthy full-timers who do not need tax relief do not get it through the RTE
Just click on the Amend the RTE link and submit the petition by October 30! Share this petition with all part-time and full-time residents you know who support the initiative.
YOUR signature shows your support for the request to amend the State’s RTE legislation under MGL. Ch 59 to ensure tax fairness for us and tax relief for our neighbors who need it.
